Road of Mantuan Rice and Risotti

The landscape of the small part of Manuan territory, between the left bank of the Mincio river and the land’s border with the Veneto region, where the itinerary of the Strada del Riso e dei Risotti Mantovani travels, is characterized by a flat countryside, marked with rivers and channels.

This is a land where the cultivation of rice, in particular the Vialone Nano type, can be traced back in history and is responsible for characterizing the area’s rural architecture: rice courts and farmyards, landings places for barges, drying plants and devices for rice husking. The western part of the Strada crosses a good portion of Mincio Park, the main naturalistic area in the province of Mantua. In the little town of Pontemerlano are Villa Isabella d’Este and Villa Riesenfeldt, two examples of patrician rococo residences. Close by is the Vallazza Nature Reserve. On the way to Ostiglia, one will reach the very little town of Governolo where, according to historical tradition, Pope Leo I stopped the invasion of Attila, the king of the Huns . Governolo still holds two important hydraulic works: the Conca di Sostegno or Conca Vinciana (conca meaning basin), built after Pitentino’s project (1198) and later finished by Bertazzolo according to Leonardo’s drawings. The Conca prevents a backflow of the Po river.

Farther on toward the valley is the Conca di San Leone that allows the navigation between the waters of the Mincio and Po rivers, wich are on different levels. Among the built-up areas of Ostiglia and Revere, in the Po river-bed, is the nature reserve of Boschina Isle.

Going back northwards, and after only a few miles, one arrives at Villimpenta, with its Scaligero castle wich dates back to the mid-13 century, and the Villa Gonzaghesca or Villa Zani, attributed to architect Giulio Romano. Finally, the town of Castel D’Ario, wich still has its towers and part of its castle’s walls, is famus for being the birthplace of the legendary Italian racecar driver Tazio Nuvolari (1892-1953), whom the writer D’Annunzio defined as “il mantovano volante “ (the flying Mantuan).
