The Wine and Food Road of the Valtellina extends over the entire province of Sondrio, encompassing the DOC and DOCG wine appellation areas, and showcasing the great red wines and other typical and traditional agrifood products of the Valtellina. The Valchiavenna and the Valtellina boast many prehistoric and historical remains: from rock engravings to castles and stately homes in urban centres and several sanctuaries that rise up symbolically from a sea of vines. Vine-growing in these valleys has always been vital for the local economy and has played a key role in preserving the landscape. The territory of the Wine and Food Road of the Valtellina is divided into five areas corresponding to geographical and historical boundaries: the Contado di Chiavenna (Chiavenna and its environs), the Terziere di Sotto (Morbegno and its environs), the Terziere di Mezzo (Sondrio and its environs), the Terziere di Sopra (Tirano, Sondrio and its environs) and the Magnifica Terra (Bormio and its environs). Tourists can follow the extremely interesting
and scenic routes that wind along the terraced vineyards on the Rhaetian (northern) side of the Valtellina valley by car, bicycle or on foot. The routes are named after and traverse the production zones of Valtellina Superiore DOCG wine, extending from Maroggia (in the Commune of Berbenno) to the area of Sassella (between the Communes
of Castione Andevenno and Sondrio); from Grumello (northeast of Sondrio) to Inferno (between the Communes of Poggiridenti and Chiuro), while the Valgella route wends its way between the Communes of Chiuro and Teglio and near the residential area of Tirano is the last route, Baruffini.
